![]() The city renegotiated its contract with garbage and recycling provider CWD in 2015, and we now offer residential customers the ability to dispose of their yard waste every week, curbside, in special collections transported to a Living Earth facility. Keller is also no longer in the same predicament regarding yard waste disposal options as we were when the program began. ![]() Since then, however, the site has had a number of issues, including illegal dumping, heavy use by non-residents and commercial landscapers, volunteer shortages, and rising expenses both as a result of more materials being dropped off and increases in grinding rates.ĭreams of using the mulch created from the materials dropped at the site have also not come to pass, as the allotted budget has not covered the multiple grindings needed to make the mulch usable instead, materials that we've ground up in the past have simply been left on site to decompose.Īdditionally, the program is frustrating to surrounding residents who have expressed their displeasure at the traffic and noise created by the drop-offs, the air pollution created by grinding activities (the city has been paying to wash nearby windows and clean nearby pools after grinding), and the reality that the city is operating a yard waste landfill in their backyard on land that was purchased for - and is shown in the Master Plan as - the future Northeast Park. The yard waste drop-off program that got its start several years ago was a good idea at the time, offering a way for residents to dispose of branches, leaves and other organic materials without contributing to our landfill. The other City Council members and I have received a few questions about that decision as the news has spread throughout the community, so here are the basics.
